I just wanted to report on the successful show The Ultimate Piaffe riders
and the offspring of Ideal had this weekend at the USDF/USEF dressage show
at the Lake Oswego Hunt Club.
The riders and horses worked hard to reap the rewards and I am very proud
to give them the credit they deserve and to share it with the Ultimate
Piaffe friends and family.
Amy Vandenburgh, our assistant trainer and her stunning palomino mare Ibid
have worked very hard this past year and arrived at D@LOHC fresh off of
wins from Letter Perfect Dressage as well as Dressage at DevonWood. Amy
and Ibid competed at second level riding one test a day on Friday,
Saturday and Sunday and they WON all three classes! Friday they earned a
respectable 63% and raised that on both Saturday and Sunday with a huge
68.649% and 68.158%! Certainly every bit as rewarding as the scores was
the comment from one of the judges saying " finally true collection
in a test, nice to see"! Ibid is by Ideal and out of a pre mare book
quarter horse/paint mare, a very non traditional type in sport horse
breeding. The highlights were most definitely her simple changes and
lateral work as well as the medium canter.
Amy was busy this weekend and brought out the 15.2 chestnut mare Innocence
for her debut. Innocence is a full sister to the Ultimate Piaffe's
schoolmaster Illusion, best known as our former assistant Val Zeek's show
partner. To say that Amy has formed a trusting relationship with
this mare would be an understatement as not only was this Innocence's
first show- it was her first time ever off the property!
What Amy and this mare were able to accomplish is simply remarkable and
the results were more then anyone could have ever wanted. The very first
test earned a 60% and honestly we would have been happy with that but
Innocence discovered she loved this entire "show" thing and with
Amy's guidance each day was a grand improvement. On Saturday she earned
her first ribbon, a 4th place with a 63.348% and with two rides on Sunday
she thrilled us by pulling in a super 68.261% and a 2nd place! Her second
ride on Sunday scored a 65% and a 3rd place ribbon. We both loved and
laughed over the judges commenting on how the tests were well presented
and confidently ridden - Amy made her look like she's been showing for 10
years. Innocence is out of our beloved Belgian draft mare Babe,
another of those non traditional breeding - just one more example of why
Ideal is known as such a successful improvement sire.
The Lake Oswego Hunt Club show was the chance for Darrel Purdy
and Immerjoy to compete without fighting the failed X&$%##G saddle that caused
the horrible injury to Darrel's #1 horse Gauguin's Ideal at Dressage at
DevonWood. Darrel rode in two different saddles and after having one not
so good test and one 64.286% on Friday, both earning 6th place- Immerjoy
finally started to trust Darrel again and began earning the scores and the
placings she was bred to produce. On Saturday Immerjoy placed 3rd
with a 64.348% on her first test of the day but when she completed her
second test on Saturday that her breeding and training was realized -
Darrel and I were on our way to grab some lunch when Amy called to say
that "Joy" had won her test with a 68.700%, in a large class!
Darrel and Immerjoy had only one class on Sunday and proved herself once
again winning that class as well with a 67.143.
Their highlights had to be the trade off 8's between Immerjoy's gaits and
Darrel's rider position. It seemed interesting that the judges seemed to
not want to give them both 8's on the same test. Immerjoy is out of the
main stud book Hanoverian mare Proxy.
Emma Weirich and her elegant chestnut mare Illie continued building on
their fairly new partnership with a fourth place ribbon to bring home.
Illie and Emma suffered that riders nightmare of starting your first test
of the show and having something very loud and unexpected happen right
behind you. Poor kid, just as she was starting a promising test a home
owner- who's place is tucked away just behind the arena- started banging
on something sending both the noise and Illie rushing away from
"A". Emma has the respect of all of the season riders and we all
told her of our own horrible stories. Emma was disappointed but had an
amazing attitude - that and a brilliant horse like Illie will get you far
in this discipline.
I just want to say how proud I am of the riders and horses- these guys
earned their scores and placings with their dedication, hard work and the
trust of their horses.
And thanks to Melissa Haines for taking care of the horses at home
while we travel to the shows. I think everyone at the show would also want
to thank Amy's boyfriend Kelsey who cheerfully helped out in countless
ways. It's not just the riders, horses, and trainers who help make shows
like this a success- we need lots of support to do as well as we did this
past weekend.
So proud, Michelle

Letter to Michelle from Virginia
Allen
Hi all my horse friends. I just had to share this email with you. This
is from FEI rider Virginia Allen from Canada. Virginia has purchased two
Ideal babies we bred, both are our by our Oldenburg stallion Ideal. The
first Immerwyn ( Vinnie) got scores in the 80's% and showed FEI before Virginia
sold him to a Jr rider.
The next horse is the mare I Candy. Those of you who don't know
"Candy" she was out of our Hannoverian mare Catinka. The 17+
chestnut mare earned premium status this past summer by the ISR/Oldenburg.
She is a full sister to one of Darrel's favorite horses, Ingo's Katze
owned by Melissa and Charlotte Haines.
Virginia
is a wonderful person and has much success as a FEI dressage
rider and trainer. As you will see below this horse is just awesome,
she's such high quality that no one can believe she isn't imported and
European trained. I'll get some video up of her just as soon as we receive
it. I'm so proud of Virginia and I Candy and I'm so grateful that
this lovely mare is in the hands of such a sweet deserving person.
Just had to share with all of you who love horses. Enjoy an email from a
fellow Ultimate Piaffe family member.

Subject: I Candy's first show!
Hi Michelle,
We just got back from the show at Thunderbird
and I had to give you an update! I am so excited and pleased with I
Candy and our debut. She was so good!!!! The warm up with the other
horses was a bit exciting for her, as it was outside and I actually
have never ridden her outside (our ring is still too wet) but she
coped very well. She just got very big and impressive! The tests
were all in a coverall arena and it was fairly spooky in there for
most horses. I Candy was amazing and scored 72.85% which was first
out of over 40 horses! She won the High Score award of the day. It
was probably the best Training level test that I have ever ridden on
any horse including even Vinny. She was relaxed and showed off her
powerful gaits. The judge was actually a very low marker and some
very expensive (and nicely ridden) horses were only in the
60's. Her big competition was a Dutch horse from DG Bar Ranch,
another imported Dutch gelding by 007 and an imported from
Germany, Weltmeyer son. People around here have been spending a
lot of money. The quality of the horses has really improved during
the three years that I haven't been riding. The judge put only one
comment on the test- "Wow"!!!
I was very proud of I Candy and was hoping for
another good test today. She didn't let me down and I thought that
it was markedly better! My centre lines were better, although not
perfect and her walk was super- more stretching and active. The
judge stopped me after the test and asked me all about her breeding
and where she had come from. She said that I was very lucky to have
such a fantastic horse and that she felt that big things were in
store for her! She wrote on the test that it was a pleasure to judge
her and that she expected that we would be making people's jaws drop
as she moved up through the levels. My mark ended up exactly the
same, even though I felt it was a much better test. I think that
that particular judge had trouble giving so many high marks as she
usually is one of those ones who only gives 5's and 6's! I am not
complaining though!! She won the High Score for Sunday as well and
now everyone around here knows her name! Oddly enough one lady came
up to me when I was warming up (she is also a judge) and said that
my horse was "eye candy"!
I had a video done, so hopefully it will turn
out and I can send you a link to see it. Bud took a few photos, but
I think the horse looks much better than the rider!! I will have to
pull up my socks in a hurry. It was nice to have confirmation that
she is just as good as I thought she was! I try to be objective, but
it's easy to be "barn blind" and even easier when you have
been showing donkeys for a few years instead of dressage horses!!
Anyways I just had to share my excitement with
I Candy's family!! I may not sleep tonight- it was kind of a big
deal for me after not having shown for so long and after having
hurt my back. It's a good felling (in a twisted kind of way!) to
have none of the local dressage queens speaking to me again!!!

One of the most popular segments from the videos produced each year for
the IDEAL were shots filmed of Michelle working with Oldenburg Stallion
"at liberty". With just her hand signals, body language and counting on
the "bands of the heart", Michelle was able to
put the three quarter ton animal through his paces. Below is a U-Tube
Video pulled from those videos.
IDEAL, now snow white and as trust worthy as ever.
Below is a U-TUBE "family album".
Michelle and her husband Darrel share more than
training Ideal and his offspring. They were both voted
Oregon Dressage Society "Trainers of
the Year 2006". Contact either for information about teaching and
training at The Ultimate Piaffe at Lake Oswego, Oregon.
